The Sunflower Project

The Sunflower Project

The Sunflower Project
(2743 30TH ST, A&W REGIONAL OFFICE BUILDING)

This is the first mural painted for the Sunshine Flower Project – Reconciliation through Cultural Diversity. The project aims to memorialize victims of internment camps and residential schools across Canada, to spread awareness, and to educate people about an aspect of history that is often kept quiet. Through these means, the Sunflower Project ultimately aims to heal past wounds. This mural portrays Ukrainian prisoners of WWI. Ukrainian prisoners were held across Canada from 1914-1920. Ukrainian and German prisoners of war were held in a prison on what is now W.L. Seaton Secondary School and MacDonald Park.
